Winter Foxes
Two red foxes pick their way through fresh snow, painted from winter field sketches. The piece anchors the studio’s wildlife series: patient observation first, atmosphere second.
About this piece
Winter Foxes began as a morning of tracks and sightings at the edge of a pine wood. Back in the studio the sketches became a full watercolor in cool washes, with gouache reserved for the snow light on the foxes’ backs. It is the largest wildlife piece in the current portfolio and the study most often requested as a print.
How it was made
Field sketches in graphite, color notes taken on site, then three layered washes in the studio. The foreground grasses were lifted out with a dry brush while the final wash was still damp.
