How the books work

One pocket book lives in the studio coat, one on the desk. The pocket book holds postures, weather and anything that will not sit still. The desk book holds tonal studies, repeats and the dull, necessary arithmetic of compositions — thirds, diagonals, where the eye rests.

Finished pieces rarely invent; they select. A fox seen in October becomes a watercolor in January. Clients commissioning work are welcome to browse the books when they visit — most commissions begin with a client pointing at a sketch and saying “that one.”
