About this piece

Grey Fox completes the studio’s fox pair: red foxes in snow for winter, the grey fox for autumn. This is the only wild canid that climbs trees, and the picture gives it a bank worthy of the talent — roots, hazel and leaf litter rendered leaf by leaf. The original hangs in the studio; prints carry the same autumn light.

How it was made

Trail-camera stills for the pose, autumn leaf studies gathered on walks, then watercolor over a detailed graphite cartoon. The tail alone took four evenings.
