About

An illustrator of wild and cultivated things

Halden Reyes works in watercolor, oil and graphite from a north-lit studio, painting wildlife, botanicals and narrative scenes for collectors, publishers and patient clients.

The studio

The work begins outdoors — in hides, along embankments, at the edge of woods — and finishes slowly indoors. Field sketches and color notes come first; the finished illustration is built from them, never from photographs alone.

Subjects return year after year: foxes in winter, warblers in cane, one amaryllis bulb that has now been painted four times. The portfolio grows the way a garden does — by tending the same ground.

Work undertaken
