Still life
Bouquet in a Niche
Tulips, roses and carnations gathered in a stone niche — a still life in the Dutch manner, painted flower by flower as each bloomed.
About this piece
Bouquet in a Niche took a full spring to complete, because every flower was painted from life at its peak. The dark niche sets the blooms forward and gives the panel its chapel-like calm. It was the first oil in the portfolio and still the piece visitors ask about most at open-studio days.
How it was made
A grisaille underpainting fixed the whole design in a day; color went on flower by flower over ten weeks. The stone niche was painted last, in two sessions, to unify the light.
