Mangrove Hummingbirds
Three hummingbirds work a flowering vine — a plate in the spirit of the great 19th-century bird books, drawn from museum skins and garden notes.
About this piece
Mangrove Hummingbirds was commissioned as part of a set of pollinator plates for a nature reserve visitor center. The composition follows the vine’s own logic: the birds enter where the flowers open. It remains one of the studio’s most licensed images, appearing on trail guides and seed packets.
How it was made
Museum skin studies for plumage accuracy, garden sketches for the vine, then a full-size cartoon transferred to cotton paper. Iridescence suggested with layered glazes rather than metallic paint.
