Botanical
Amaryllis
Amaryllis aulica in deep rose pink, painted at full bloom over nine days. A botanical portrait in the tradition of the great flower books.
About this piece
The Amaryllis plate belongs to an ongoing series of single-specimen botanicals, each painted from a living plant rather than photographs. This bulb flowered on the studio windowsill in February; every stage from bud to full trumpet was drawn before the petals fell. Collectors of botanical work commission similar single-subject plates for dining rooms and libraries.
How it was made
Daily graphite studies as the bloom opened, then wet-on-dry watercolor with color matched each morning under north light. The leaves were painted last to keep their edges crisp.
