Blossom Embankment
Cherry trees in full flower along a river embankment, with crowds out to see them — a spring scene in the ukiyo-e manner.
About this piece
Blossom Embankment was painted after a spring visit to a riverside cherry walk, working in the compositional language of the Japanese masters: a high horizon, one strong diagonal of water, and blossom masses that carry the whole design. Travel and place-based pictures form a growing part of the portfolio.
How it was made
Location sketches in a pocket book, then the design resolved in three values before any color. Blossom masses were stippled over a pale wash so the paper itself makes the light.
